352. Howard Leon Sayer
was born on 14 Jul 1886 in Fine,
St. Lawrence Co, NY. He resided at before 1957 in Black River, Jefferson
Co, NY. He resided at 9543 Elizabeth Street between 1957 and 1965 in South
Gate, Los Angerles Co, CA. He died on 29 Aug 1969 in Pacific Grove,
Monterey Co, CA. Friday night of a heart attack. His funeral was The Paul
Mortuary on 2 Sep 1969 in Pacific Grove, Monterey Co, CA. He was buried on
3 Sep 1969 in El Carmelo Cemetery, Pacific Grove, Monterey Co, CA. He
attented schools in Fine and Edwards. He went to work on a farm at the age
of 16.
Howard and Olive met at a birthday party in 1905 in Edwards, NY. Two years
latter they were married on her 22 birthday. After their marriage, they
made their home at Edwards until May, 1909, when they moved to Black
River.
Mr. Sayer worked in the chair factory in their early days residence in
Black River at the weekly wage of $8. Mrs. Sayer worked at sewing.
In 1911, the couple moved back to Edwards where they operated a farm. When
Mr. Sayer gave up farming because of ill health, he went to work for the
National Paper Products company, Edwards.
In May 1929, the couple again moved to Black River. They continued their
residence there until September 1957. While in Black River, Howard
continued working for the paper company until 1932.
In February, 1933, Mr. Sayer's back was broken while at work as a member
of the Black River volunteer fire department. He was unable to work for
eight years.
When he was able to do so, Mr. Sayer took emplolyment at Pine Camp, now
Camp Drum. He also worked at odd jobs around the village until he retired
at the age of 65 in 1951.
He was employeed as a reforestration man in the latter part of his life.
In September of 1957, Mr. and Mrs. Sayer sold their Black River home and
moved to California, their fourth trip west. They lived with Mrs. Frances
Smith until they bought her house at 9543 Elizabeth Street, South Gate,
CA.
When their daughter's family moved north to Pacific Grove, CA in Feb 1965,
they sold there house and moved too. They occupied the three rooms on the
ground floor of their daugther's Victorian home. It comprised a living
room, bath room, and bedroom. Both Howard and Olive livied their until
their deaths in 1969 and 1977.
He was married to Olive Cecelia O'Shea (daughter of James
Henry O'Shea and Mary Jane Fleming) on 9 Nov 1907 in
Harrisville, St. Lawrence Co, NY. Olive Cecelia O'Shea
was born on 9 Nov 1886 in Edwards,
St. Lawrence Co, NY. She was buried in Jun 1977 in El Carmelo Cemetery,
Pacific Grove, Monterey Co, CA. She died on 10 Jun 1977 in Pacific Grove,
Monterey Co, CA. She attended Edwards Free school. On completion of her
schooling, she worked as a dressmaker. Howard Leon Sayer and Olive Cecelia
