Winter '93
Dear Friends
Time again for the annual letter from the Corys. This has been a very interesting year for us. Significant events
have happened to each of us. Vibeké finished her second year of college and changed her major, Chris moved to Oakland, and Earl
has a new job.
You might well wonder why our card has Columbus on it this year. Well this was the year of Celebrations. Columbus
celebrated his 500th, Vibeké her 21st birthday, Chris her 5th year at Ingres (the longest she has been with any company), but
the biggest event was the PARTY! Earl and Chris celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary. Vibeké threw them a big party
(but she didn't pay for it) at their club. It was held out-doors on July 11, on a tennis court, with over 150 people, a D.J.,
good beer, wine, booze, food, dancing, and an ice cream cart. It even rained.
We want to once again thank all of you that came and all of you that send best wishes. During our research to
locate people, we were able to track down and talk to folks that we have not seen since our wedding. We had friends join us from
all over the state and from as far away as Ohio, Florida, Virginia, and Guadalajara. There were many that showed up that we had
not seen in years. We asked that no one bring presents (but some people didn't read the letter, thanks for all the wonderful gifts)
and filled two large albums with photos and memorabilia. Come by and see it sometime. It was by far the best party that we have
ever given. Since that party turned out so well, we are going to do it again on Saturday, July 8, 2017. Mark it on your calendar
to join us for our 50th, we want that one to be even bigger!!
Talking about parties, we are going to have yet another one next year. This time it will be for Chris's parents
50th Anniversary. It is planned for September 11, at the Hilton in Whittier. You will hear more as the time nears.
Chris is still with Ingres, but her job as the South West Area Technical Manager has changed. While sitting in
for her boss in Alameda, CA, who was out on maternity leave, an opportunity arose for her to transfer to the home office as the
Northern California Area Technical Manager. She had wanted to go to the home office for several years, so she couldn't turn it
down. In September, we loaded furniture and moved her to Oakland. This has cut into her Tennis (not to mention other things),
but she made it to first place in the "B" group this year. Earl has been flying north to visit her and she has been flying south
to visit him and Vibeké.
Vibeké turned twenty-one this fall and immediately wanted a Margarita. The three of us rendezvoused in San Francisco,
where Chris was staying. We went to China Town where Vibeké ordered her Margarita and her favorite food. We then went to see a
great play in the theater district called "Ladies Room". She is in her second year at Pierce College and has found a new major,
Psychology. She decided that there is more money in that than acting. During the summer, she worked as a "Kitty Girl". In this
job she wore a costume, carried a tray, and sold cigarettes, candy, gum, and Cracker Jacks at "underground" clubs, "Raves", and
private parties. (Sounds like her doesn't it!)
Earl's "two month" consulting job at Public Storage finished in May, after six months. In July, he started as
a Senior System Manager at Health Net in Woodland Hills (a mile and a half from home). He continues his activities in DECUS where
he is the Chair of the Symposia Committee. Meetings have taken him on a few trips (Chris says "a few too many") to places like
Atlanta, Dallas, Bozeman, Portland, Monterey, Las Vegas, (on Chris's Birthday!) as well as Boston. Chris joined him in Monterey
in April and Bozeman in August, where they went white-water rafting, horseback riding, and drove through a snowstorm.
Last winter, Earl and Chris went skiing in Taos, New Mexico and had a great time. The mountain is mostly intermediate
to expert, cold (but not as cold as Whistler), with lots of runs. For those of you that ski - beware of the altitude. The first
day was very tiring.
While Earl was between jobs, he and Chris used frequent flier miles to go visit the Jalberts in Granville, Ohio.
They spent a few days relaxing, visiting, and looking around before she had to go back to work. Earl stayed an extra week to take
a computer class. Also in June, we put our house on the market, but it has not sold. If anyone is interested, let us know, we
will make you a great deal.
After the 25[th] Anniversary party, we went to Hawaii for 10 days. Josef and Feltina Mayer flew in from Germany
to join us. After a little fast-talking about Earl's "connections", he got all of us into nice rooms in the Hilton Hawaiian Village
on Waikiki for the first three days. We traveled around showing the Mayers the splendors of Oahu. On Monday, the four of us island
hopped to Kaui where we were joined by Ed, Marie, and Eddie Gregor. The seven of us stayed in a condo in Poipu (the eye of the
hurricane passed through there several weeks later). The days on Kaui were filled with sun, fun, food, Pińa Coladas, Mai Tais,
sail boarding, sight-seeing in our rented Lincoln Town Car, and snorkeling.
For Halloween, Earl visited Chris. Mr. "Fix-it" spent a good part of the time repairing and adding to her apartment
. . . wiring, two telephone lines (so she can talk and type at the same time), phones, terminal, lights, and door fixtures. If
you ever want to go "people watching", put in your reservations for Halloween in San Francisco. About half of the folks are in
costume. Some are very cleaver and elaborate, but by far the most popular is going in "drag".
On Thanksgiving all of us met at Grandpa and Grandma Cory's and then drove to to Oakland to spend the weekend.
Vibeké joined friends for a mammoth San Francisco "Rave".
Earl, even though he has been busy this year looking for jobs, working, and "doing DECUS", has found time to get
back to genealogy. His book The Giles and Thomas Cor(e)y Family now has over 800 Corys in his branch of the family, going back
to 1640. By early next year, he hopes to have it in good enough shape to send a copy to all those who have helped him gather information.
Well that's our life in 1992. We are always happy to hear from you and what you and your family have been doing.
We accept, letters, phone calls, visits, etc. at our home(s). If you are ever out our way, let us know and maybe we can get together
and relive old times. Our phones are: (818) 999-9851 and (818) 999-9852 in Los Angeles and (510) 444-0732 and 444-0827 in Oakland.
There are recorders on all lines.
Both Earl and Chris got the new AT&T 700 numbers this year. Now you can call either of us no matter where we are.
