Dear Friends
Time again for the annual letter from the Corys. Boy, do
we have a lot of news this year. Significant events have happened to each
of us. Vibeké started college, Chris has taken up tennis, and Earl has a
new job.
First, let us tell you about Vibeké. She turned nineteen
this fall. In the spring she was stunning in her black evening dress for
her senior prom. Then, in June, she GRADUATED from High School.
During the summer, after getting cold feet a couple of times, she
auditioned for The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena.
She was very anxious, since only 10% of the students are
straight from High School. The school called her the day after the
audition and told her she was accepted. She called Earl to tell him the
news and was half way through the conversation before he had the phone to
his ear. She has never been so excited (thank you Peggy and Bonnie for
your letters of recommendation). As one can imagine, this is a new life
for all of us. She is taking classes in Phonetics, Dance, Acting, and
other such things. This is not your traditional college.
Since the school is 35 miles away, she decided that it
would be better to live near campus. She has an apartment with two other,
second year, students. It is a three bedroom, one bath, and a kitchen
built over another two apartments. She had always said that she wanted to
be a "starving actress", now she has found out what it is like. She stops
by the house to do her laundry and to get a good restaurant meal a couple
of times a week, so much for Mom's home cooking.
Her room is the smallest that she has ever had. She moved
her essentials, bed, entertainment center, TV, Nintendo, make-up, and
clothes. As soon as she moved out, Chris took the rest of her things and
put them into her closet, moved in a couch, TV, and terminal. In other
words, Chris took over Vibeké's bedroom and turned it into a
sitting/working room. Of course, Earl was happy about this, it gave him
more space in the computer room to collect things.
Chris' company, Relational Technology Incorporated,
changed its name to Ingres Corporation this year and then was bought out
by A.S.K. Computer. After the merging of the two companies in November,
there was reorganization. As a result, her job as the South West Region
Technical Support Manager expanded and she now has more people reporting
to her. Her job has her traveling around Southern California, Arizona,
Nevada, and to the Ingres office in Alameda.
This year, we all joined a health and tennis club here in
Woodland Hills. Chris has taken up tennis and is doing extremely well.
When she started, she was the bottom in the lowest group. By December she
has progressed to first place in the C group and says she is ready to take
on the Bs.
Earl completed his eighth year at CONTEL Corporation in
Westlake Village as a Systems Manager. Due to the "Peace Dividend", the
aerospace industry in Southern California has been hard hit with layoffs.
Therefore, to protect himself, in the middle of the year he started
looking for something in more of a commercial line. Monday, November 5, he
started as the Vice President of Engineering at IDSI in Valencia. It's a
small computer software company. He has several people reporting to him
and is currently responsible for getting a new product to market by the
end of the year. He is very excited (if you can imagine Earl getting
excited!) about his new position.
The company has a 6 passenger, twin engine, Piper Seneca
II airplane. He has taken one trip in it to Las Vegas to attend a seminar
in November. Chris also took a trip in it to Las Vegas to "play the
tables" with some friends from DECUS while Earl was involved in a
Symposium. Next year, Earl plans on taking flying lessons, so he too can
soar with the eagles, rather than drive with the turkeys.
As you can see, Earl has continued his activities in DECUS
as the Vice Chair of the Symposia Committee. Meetings have taken him to
Tucson, AZ and Kiawah Island, S.C. as well as a few trips to Boston. Chris
says "a few too many."
We have been up to other things this year. In April, Earl
and Chris, along with some friends, Ed and Marie Gregor, Adele Schmitz and
Bob Walden, went to Club Med in Cancun. They had a great time, they
learned how to Sail Board and Scuba Dive, drank a lot of Margaritas,
rested in the sun, snorkeled, and just generally relaxed. During the trip,
they spent one day at the Mayan Ruins in Chizen Itza, where Earl bought a
painting of the date of Vibeké's birth in Mayan. After he got home, he
checked the date with a program he had written and found that it off by
one day.
In May, Chris and Earl went to New Orleans for a week long
DECUS Symposium. They arrived on Friday just before the final weekend of
the New Orleans Jazz Festival. This was the highlight of the trip. They
highly recommend to anyone who likes any form of jazz that they go there
for the Jazz Festival. For $10 a day, it can't be "beat", so to say. While
Earl attended to DECUS business, Chris had a great time on Bourbon Street,
Canal Street, and . . . .
Earl, as you know, is interested in genealogy. Last year
he spent a lot of time working on his book about the Sayer Family, this
year it was the Corys. He has gathered a great deal on that family with
help from several people and several trips to New Hampshire and
Massachusetts. He has not forgotten all the help he has received and
promises to write soon to share his findings on the families.
Well that's our life in 1990. We are always happy to hear
from you and what you and your family have been doing. We accept, letters,
phone calls, visits, etc. at our new home. If you are ever out our way,
let us know and maybe we can get together and relive old times. We have an
extra room. Our phones are: (818) 999-9851 and (818) 999-9852. There is a
recorder on both.
Hope to hear from you soon,
-
