Dear Friends,Surprise, we didn’t move (well at least Earl and Chris didn’t move)!
Earl’s contract at Marin General Hospital continues, but his contract in Reno ended
in February. Now he spends two days a week working from home. Chris thinks he is semi-retired and finds many little things for
him to do. In spite of her, his web business is growing.
Chris’ company changed its name and went public in March. With her stock options, we were “potentially rich” for
a few days, but then the bottom dropped out of the stock market, oh well... She traveled a lot this year; the first seven months
were spent in Los Angeles. She finished out November in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. She tried to take them a few extra ballots to help
out, but they were rejected due to no postmarks J.
Vibeké moved her pet farm to a new place in Santa Rosa. She worked this year as a
Veterinarian
Technician, a caterer, a restaurant
hostess, and finally at a day-care center at Santa Rosa College. She decided to put her Veterinarian skills to work and is studying
to become a registered nurse (human).
In December 99, Earl’s niece, Reva, started using our downstairs apartment while
she attended the Culinary Arts Academy in San Francisco. It was great having her there and allowing us to eat her homework (yum).
On St. Patrick’s Day a few friends came over for our traditional green food and dark beer. Reva furnished green desserts.
In
April we joined Chris’ cousin Margie and her husband and visited the Filoli Gardens. If you are ever
looking for something to do, we highly recommend a visit.
In June, our “Summer Sons”, Pablo and Adolfo Troncoso returned. Adolfo came for
a month, but Pablo is staying for the year. They joined Chris’ Tennis Club and participated in a couple of tournaments. Pablo
went on to get his USTA rating so that he can compete in league play. We equipped them with
several bicycles (they
seem to wander off here in Oakland) and BART tickets so that they could travel around the streets of Oakland, Berkeley, and San
Francisco. They went to Giants’ games at the new PacBell Park and shopped and shopped and shopped and shopped and …
The highlight of the summer was our weeklong tent camping trip to Yosemite Valley.
The summer
sons
had never been camping before, so this was a marvelous experience. They hiked, rode bikes, swam, rock climbed, rafted on the
Merced, saw bear, bobcat, deer, and many other wild critters. To top off the week, they climbed to the top of half-dome and back
in 9 hours. That evening we took them to the Ahwanee for dinner where they were required to wear dinner jackets with their hiking
boots. They felt like Jack Nicholson in “As good as it gets”.
Pablo is studying business at Laney College in Oakland. He also is a left-handed
pitcher, first baseman, and designated hitter on the Laney College Baseball team. He has to “work” the Cal and Raiders games to
earn money for the team. After Reva’s Graduation in July, he moved into the downstairs apartment.
In August, Earl and his parents went to Newport News, VA for the annual meeting
of the Cory Family Society. At the meeting he was elected Vice President and Webmaster. While in the area, they visited Jamestown,
Yorktown Battlefield, Fort Monroe, Williamsburg, and Petersburg.
Chris plays tennis every chance she has, but since she is home only on the weekends,
it has cut into her game. She played in a league this year and did well. She plays every Saturday (and any other day she can
get away) and is still taking lessons from Anne Lowry.
In June, we held our “Second Annual Cory Tequila Tasting.” We invited over 50 people
to try over 25 different tequilas. Don Rose once again supplied suitably engraved glasses for the occasion and Chris cooked Mole
for the crowd.
In October, Jeff and Cheryl Jalbert, stopped by on their way back from Napa. They were
returning the visit we made in January to Granville, Ohio for Jeff’s surprise birthday party birthday party. We had a good
weekend in Granville visiting with the folks that Earl worked with several years ago at JCC and he had the chance to reminisce
with a lot of his old DECUS buddies.
This year we saw several good plays in Los Angeles. We continue to get season tickets
to the Mark Taper Forum with Marie Gregor. Not only do we see fine theatre, it also gives us an excuse to visit friends
and family and walk along the Southern California beaches.
In September we became the godparents to our latest niece, Rachel Sands.
Next July we plan to take our first cruise to the Inland Passage and then on to the
rest of Alaska. It looks like there will be about 10 people going.
Chris continues to work in our small front yard, planting flowers. Pablo has worked very hard
with her moving rocks, taking out old plants, and landscaping. As a result, he has a lawn in front of his door, but no light.
Next summer we will start on the back. It needs a couple of wooden decks and a cover so we can get back to Margaritas and barbeques.
Earl bought the software so you can see it on the computer, but that’s as far as it has gotten.
Well that is a summary of our life in 2000. We are looking forward to hearing from
you. We accept letters, phone calls, visits, e-mail, faxes, etc. If you are ever out our way, let us know and we can get together.
Sunday waffles anyone?
